Mark Burnett and Virgin Galactic Team Up on New "Space Race" Show
If you have been waiting for your chance to fly into space - today may be your day. NBC, Virgin Galactic and T.V. Producer Mark Burnett (the producer of "Survivor," and "The Voice,") have just announced an exclusive deal to make an "unscripted" T.V. show where the winner of the "groundbreaking" elimination competition series will get to the trip of a lifetime- flying to space on Virgin Galactic's SpaceShipTwo!
What was even more exciting to me was the inspiring and respectful tone Sir Richard Branson and Mark Burnett took when describing the new show.
Sir Richard said, “Virgin Galactic’s mission is to democratize space, eventually making commercial space travel affordable and accessible to all. ‘Space Race’ allows us to extend this opportunity of a lifetime to as many people as possible right at the start of our commercial service – through direct experience and television viewing.”
Mark Burnett added, "For the past ten years I have relentlessly pursued my dream of using a TV show to give an everyday person the chance to experience the black sky of space and look down upon mother Earth. I spent a day in the Mojave desert with Sir Richard and his impressive team. We got to see the space ship up close and hear of Sir Richard’s incredible vision of how Virgin Galactic is the future of private space travel. I am thrilled to be part of a series that will give the everyday person a chance to see space and that NBC has come on board to so that viewers at home will have a first class seat.”
Sounds like they both really get what is possible when you take people out of their everyday and give them that mind-blowing #spaceperspective.
According to the press release, “Space Race” will have unprecedented access to Virgin Galactic’s home in the state-of-the-art Spaceport America in New Mexico, the departure point and training and preparation center for space flights. Given how jaw-droppingly beautiful Spaceport America is, I can tell you it will be a great back-drop for the show. (I personally love how the Spaceport hangar doors look like they are straight out of Star Wars...)
I know I for one cannot wait to see the new show. Moreover, I cannot wait for them to open up the application process to be on the show! I would love to drive down and meet all the space-hopefuls and hear their stories.
What is even more exciting to me is that this is just the beginning. I know over time more and more people will get to see our beautiful home planet from space, and in the process come back more connected to themselves, the people they love and everyone else on the planet!
Thank you Galactic, NBC and Mr. Burnett for making this possible. I look forward to tuning in!
