Roscosmos launched a Soyuz rocket from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on Thursday carrying the crew of Expedition 38 to the International Space Station.

Koichi Wakata of Japan, Mikhail Tyurin of Russia, and Rick Mastracchio of the United States lifted off to the space station with an unusual bit of cargo, the Olympic torch for the 2014 winter games in Sochi, Russia.

The unlit torch will be taken on a spacewalk on Sunday night, in the first time an olympic torch relay has left the planet.
