Yuri's Night L.A. Gets Ready to Party Under the Shuttle Sun April 12
Astronaut Mae Jemison is speaking, JPL's Mohawk Guy will be there , Sci-Fest actors Tim Russ (Commander Tuvok “Star Trek: Voyager”), Patricia Tallman (Lyta Alexander from “Babylon 5”), and Dean Haglund (one of the Lone Gunman from “The X-Files”) will be there, as will Brian Brophy (Commander Maddox, "Star Trek: Next Generation") and Griffith Observatory's Laura Danly. The event takes place this Sunday night at the Samuel Oschin Space Shuttle Pavilion at the California Science Center in Los Angeles.
We will be premiering a new higher fidelity version of Miguel Angel Argon Calvo's dive through 300,000 galaxies as we 'fly' out from Earth to the farthest reaches of the Universe exploring one small patch of sky from the Cosmological Evolution Survey (COSMOS). (I saw it at LACMA and was stunned by it.) Forest Sterns, Head of the Artist in Residence Program at Planet Labs, SF, will be there to share about the art they have in space right now!
A blue tooth speaker in the shape of the 6 foot Dalek robot from Dr. Who will also be there to compliment the Star Wars Rebel Legions and 501st Legions that are also coming for our Throne Room scene reenactment. DJ Eva and DJ will be bringing some sick space beats as the dance floor rocks all night.
We have something for everyone!
JPL personnel will be on hand to discuss the accomplishments of the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission which flew aboard the shuttle Endeavour and acquired the most complete topographical map of the Earth (now used for a wide variety of applications and present in some form in every mobile device). Sample hardware (cabling, spacecraft model, etc.) will be present. JPL personnel will also be present to discuss the progress of the Mars Rover Curiosity. A scale model, spacecraft wheel, and stickers to give away, as well as some other items, will be present.
VIP Tickets: doors open at 7:00 p.m. to give you an extra hour under the Space Shuttle to mingle and connect with Astronauts, Rocket Scientists and local personalities or get your photo in the Photo Booth (with the Shuttle photo bombing) before the line gets really long. The VIP event will include a special talk and Q&A with former NASA Astronaut Mae Jemison that will inspire you to get your A$%! to Mars, Alpha Centauri and beyond! Don't miss it, Mae is amazing! You also get the first drink on us, your own VIP area, robots dispensing space fortunes, a free space caricature and more!
Dr. Mae Jemison is a physician, engineer, educator and entrepreneur, was the first woman of color in the world to go into space aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour in 1992 and was a NASA astronaut for six years. She runs the 100 Year Starship initiative, which is preparing us for "An Inclusive, Audacious, Journey [That] Transforms Life Here on Earth & Beyond."
After her talk you can get on your color coded glow bracelets and meet other guests to earn a free Yuri's Night button or sticker to take home. You can check out the ISS Above who will show you how to build your own wearable ISS flyover detector/reminder. Sci-Fest L.A. will be promoting their May festival and offering pictures with their celebs (who are also featured in this year's shows). The Wizards of Mars are bringing their 6 ft LED lit, acrylic disk of the Voyager Golden Record that is the centerpiece of their Black Rock City Interstellar Emissary and a number of other cool folks are joining every day!
