A USMC AV-8B Harrier crashed this afternoon on the Gila River Indian Reservation in an unpopulated desert area, about 40 miles southeast of Phoenix. The pilot ejected safely, but suffered minor lacerations that were deemed to be minor.

The Harrier was based at MCAS Yuma and crashed about 2:30pm. The flight originated about an hour early from MCAS Yuma in southern Arizona.

The Harrier is slated to be replaced in the coming years by the Lockheed Martin F-35B Lightning II, which is in early stages of operational deployment with the Marines.
