USN Rescues Three Castaways
Like a scene from a Hollywood movie, a US Navy P-8A Poseidon discovered the men who had been missing and stranded for three days on the unhabitated island of Fandadik Island in Micronesia.
The three men say a large wave capsized their small skiff and forced them to swim more than two miles before reaching land.
The men made a fire and constructed a huge HELP signal with palm fronds in the sand. The crew of VP-5, a P-8A maritime surveillance squadron from Jacksonville, FL is currently deployed to Misawa, Japan.
"Our combined efforts coupled with the willingness of many different resources to come together and help, led to the successful rescue of these three men in a very remote part of the Pacific," said Lt. William White, Sector Guam public affairs officer.
The stranded men survived without injury.
