Former Meigs Field Transformation Complete

Who in THIS community will ever forget the brazen action of Chicago's Mayor Richard Dailey when he ordered bulldozers to gouge giant "X"s in the runways of Meigs Field. Aside from the sheer destruction of public property, and nearly stranding many airplanes, it caused outrage among aviators and beyond!

Why did this become such an emotional issue? Well, we have to thank Microsoft Flight Simulator for that! It was the default airport when gamers launched this flight sim game. I wasn't a truly serious fan, but it would be hard to calculate the number of hours I spent doing touch-and-gos and landing approaches in a number of aircraft at this field. I even learned the rudimentary basics of navigating from say Champaign-Urbana back to Meigs.

Well it only took 12 years to go from losing yet another general aviation airport, to an "urban-oasis", and that transformation became complete over the weekend as Northerly Island Park finally opened. Much fanfare, and public funding made the former mayor's dream a reality.

While many see this as progress, countless others will always see it as a step backward and one less portal to the skies for those who want to be above the ground.
