Learjet Crashes Off the Coast of Ft Lauderdale, Florida
An air ambulance Learjet 35 crashed shortly after takeoff in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Ft Lauderdale, Florida on Tuesday night. Two bodies have been recovered while two remained unaccounted for.
The Learjet was registered to AirEvac International and was based in Cozumel, Mexico according to the Miami Herald. The aircraft departed the Ft Lauderdale / Hollywood International Airport around 8pm and shortly after takeoff the pilot made a "mayday" call and said he was attempting to return to the airport. The aircraft was headed to Cozumel, Mexico.
Flight tracking provided by FlightAware indicates that the Learjet 35 is registered as XA-USA and arrived from San Jose, Mexico earlier in the afternoon on Tuesday.
It is unclear whether the jet was carrying a medical patient or if the four people onboard were all crew members.
The US Coast Guard pulled debris from the ocean and is coordinating more than 10 ships to search for possible survivors.
