"Amazon Prime Air" To Offer Fast Delivery Using UAVs
It almost sounds fake, but Amazon has announced that they are developing a service called "Amazon Prime Air" which boasts package delivery in 30 minutes or less using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).
A link on Amazon's website briefly describes the program where a UAV would use GPS coordinates to autonomously deliver a small parcel to its appropriate location. Amazon's founder and CEO Jeff Bezos told Charlie Rose on CBS's "60 Minutes" that their delivery drones could carry up to 5 pounds of goods up to a 10-mile radius from one of their company's fufillment centers. Bezos also stated that these delivery vehicles would likely not appear for four to five years and would be "very green" because they don't burn fuel like regular delivery trucks.
Amazon is waiting for the FAA to make the final rules regarding commercial UAVs in the national airspace system. Amazon states that as soon as the appropriate regulations are in place they will be ready for commercial operations.
