L-39 Jet Makes Emergency Landing In Everglades
Gary Solkovits and his wife Lois became glider pilots after their L-39 lost power to their single engine jet. Just before sunset Gary made a split decision to land on a remote levee in the Everglades Wildlife Management Area east of U.S. 27 and north of Interstate 75, said Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue spokesman Mike Jachles.
Solkovits, who has also flown gliders, instructor and airshow performer, said he had "seconds, less than a minute" between the engine's failure and the craft's landing. They were able to touch down and brake just within 100 feet from a telemetry tower. The 7,500 pound Aero Vodochody L-39C survived intact.
The plane was dismantled and loaded up on a truck. For more details visit Sun Sentinel. Photos by City of Weston.
