In It To Win It, Mike Goulian's Rebuilt Racer

Team 99 completely redesigned its race plane for the 2016 Red Bull Air Races. Nothing was left untouched. Michael and Team Coordinator Pablo Branco review the modifications and explore their motivation in the video below.

Last month Team #99 completed the modifications and a test program. Mike said via his webpage, "Teammates & Bully Aero, have built what we feel is a monster race plane. There are so many details on the mods that there is not enough room to write it in this post. The effort of this project was enormous in terms of man hours but also funding. For that, I am so incredibly grateful for my air race sponsors who stepped up in support of our team. My sponsors are like family which makes flying this amazing machine around the globe special for me. So THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU to Hartzell Propeller, Cirrus Aircraft, & Bose Aviation for supporting this huge endeavor. We can’t wait to get this plane on a track in Abu Dhabi. For all of our faithful followers, we will surely be giving our 100% best effort this summer for lots of podiums."

The series like any motorsport race is about both man and machine. Mike recently shared a photo (see below his video) on his Facebook page saying, "When I was competing in #IAC Contests, I had a "little black book" which had details of how to fly every unknown figure in the Aresti Catalogue. Every time I was coached and trained on a maneuver, I wrote down how it looked, felt, and was executed from inside the cockpit. It also had some personal things in there just for me to see. I got a lot of motivation from one of my auto racing inspirations, Ayrton Senna. Ayrton was so driven to win and he was a passionate athlete. I had a picture of him in the back of my book which I looked at before every competition flight I made."

I'm hoping he packed his "little black book" for Abu Dhabi. The first race of the season is this weekend where assembly of the Team99 Edge 540 is underway.
