Remembering the 9/11 Attack From the Controllers Perspective
Nobody can forget the tragic events of 9/11/2001. In addition to countless civilian lives being lost, our industry took a major hit that forever changed the way we look at air travel. But it also showed us how we can cope with the unknown and resolve it in a safe and orderly manner.
Pilots and air traffic controllers all across the United States were put to the test that day with actions that were previously unheard of. Attached below is a video put together by the NASA Ames Research Center showing an animation of the U.S. airspace on that fateful morning. When the final word to close the national airspace went out controllers across the country had to land over 4000 airplanes as soon as possible. It was an unprecedented action, but it shows everyone's level of professionalism and how efficient and safe our airspace system really is.
Also attached is a clip from the movie "United 93" showing the air traffic controllers point of view during the attack. The movie was made to be a real time account of the days events with a focus on the flight that didn't succeed on its intended mission. The director cast a number of real-life participants to play themselves in the movie to make the film as authentic as possible. You can read more on the movie on their IMDB page.
