Another Airliner Disappears

Rough times for commercial aviation as of late. Not sure if this is tied to any violence in West Africa, but an Air Algerie MD-83 carrying 110 people has disappeared over Mali.

The MD-83 with registration EC-LTV is owned by Swiftair out of Spain, but had been leased to Air Algerie.

Flight 5017 from Burkina Faso to Algiers disappeared after requesting permission to change course to avoid a storm.

The flight path of the jet took the flight over Mali, a hotbed of violence and unrest in Western Africa, but a senior French official told the Associated Free Press that it is unlikely that the people in Mali possess the technology or equipment to bring down an airliner.

The French official also said that it is likely that a number of French nationals were on board the aircraft.

A search team has been sent to the last known location of the aircraft, but nothing has yet to be found.
