Militants Burn Planes in Libya
Islamist militants attacked Tripoli's airport on Sunday and destroyed or damaged several aircraft two days after declaring a truce with the ex-rebels (now government) forces who control it.
At least one Airbus A330 operated by Libyan Airlines was damaged by fire and an Ilyushin Il-76 was completely destroyed.
The attack comes one week after fighting at the airport halted all flights.
"The airport was attacked this morning with mortar rounds, rockets and tank fire," airport security official Al-Jilani Al-Dahesh said.
"It was the most intense bombardment so far."
The damage caused to the aircraft and airport infrastructure will was so extensive that the airport will likely be closed for months.
