Fire Shuts Down Chicago ATC
A fire broke out early Friday at the Air Traffic Control facility in Aurora, IL, prompting the evacuation of ATC workers and the delay or cancellation of hundreds of flights.
All flights into and out of O'Hare and Midway were delayed or cancelled sending a ripple effect throughout the country.
Police report that the fire was intentionally set by an employee of air traffic control center who was found in the basement of the facility with self-inflicted wounds. That employee was taken to a hospital and police continue to investigate the incident.
Last May, smoke filled an ATC radar facility in Eglin, IL, prompting the cancellation of over 600 flights.
