Pilot Dies Inflight on Red Eye to Boston
American Airlines flight 550 diverted to Syracuse, New York after the pilot, reportedly the Captain, became "incapacitated" during a red eye flight from Phoenix to Boston early Monday morning.
Local Phoenix television station KWCH-12 published a copy of the crews' calm conversation with Air Traffic Control.
A flight attendant who is also a nurse tried to provide medical assistance to the pilot according to the airline. The pilot's name and age have not been released.
The 147 passengers onboard were never in any danger and were able to continue the flight to Boston Logan International Airport after the emergency stop.
A spokesperson for American Airlines said they are deeply saddened by the death of their pilot and is focused on the family and crew involved in Monday's sudden loss.
